New Lamar principal a familiar face

After spending her whole career at Lamar Early Education Center, MaryJane Hutchins has become principal of the prekindergarten campus.

In her 22nd year with Ector County Independent School District, Hutchins taught special education for 13 years, regular education for five years and then moved to the assistant principal’s spot.

“I love teaching. I loved special ed. I loved the challenge of it. I loved the kids, just the whole thing of special ed,” Hutchins said.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s in early childhood education from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. She received her principal’s certification from Lamar University online.

Although she was unsure of what to do with her master’s degree, Hutchins said she felt like she was going to stay at Lamar. When she watched now-retired Principal Martha Mitchell in action, it piqued her interest.

Another factor was a friend of Hutchins’ who texted her one day about taking the principal’s exam.
